Chapter Eight

Arabella

Sixteen years old

ANOTHER YEAR HAS gone by and today is my birthday. I’ve managed to save enough money to get a non-driver’s identification. My mother only signed off because I told her I could get a job and bring money into the house. She’ll never do anything to pass up the chance to get her hands on any money I have the potential to bring into the house. So, she took me to get the identification and I’ve been out searching for a job ever since. I’m not sure who’s going to hire me since no one talks to me if they can help it. However, I have no doubt I’ll find something. Someone in High Point has to be in need of new employees. I’ll work hard and be the best employee they’ve ever seen.

My dream is still to get out of this town, but I need the money to make it happen. So, the way to do that is make sure I have a job and get a bank account where I can cash my checks. If I bring home half the money and my mother takes it, I’ll still be able to put some money up for when I need it. There’s nothing I want more than to get away from my mother and make sure I can get out of High Point any way possible. That’s the only thing I care about—leaving this town behind so I can move on and hopefully have some kind of future. One where I’m not treated as someone who’s such an outcast even the teachers at my school try to bring me down.

Yes, I’ve been accused of cheating, not turning in work when I sent copies by email, and everything else they can think of to get me in trouble. There’s no doubt in my mind Karmen is behind most of it either. Anything she wants, she gets. Same with Fallon and the boys. Their disdain toward me means everyone leaves me alone and treats me as horrible as they can. Including the cousin I didn’t even know I have. Collette. She’s made my life even more of a living hell than Karmen and her mean girl posse ever have.

Collette makes sure to rub it in my face on a daily basis that she’s living in our grandparent’s mansion, given everything she wants, and has Dash wrapped around her little finger. I don’t see the thing with Dash, but I’m sure they’re involved. It wouldn’t really surprise me. Since I don’t give a shit what they do, it means nothing to me. The boys were once my best friends and now they’re absolutely nothing to me. I don’t have friends or anyone else I can confide in about anything. Even when I’m supposed to have a guidance counselor in school, they don’t do anything for me. Mrs. Davenport wouldn’t even let me combine classes so I can graduate early or anything. I offered to tutor for my manuscript and was turned down by Mrs.
